a day of firsts....

Friday, May 30, 2008

Wow it's been one of those days... and it's only 3:oopm. Today we had one crazy morning... alot of firsts... here we go:

the TV has been a challenge in our house for quite some time now. Jonah has self-educated himself on the function of each button on our TV and will frequently walk over, pop in a DVD, hit pause, skip, slow-mo, repeat, repeat, repeat. Not only do i not want him to claim the TV as his favorite "toy", i REALLY don't want him punching all the buttons and ruining the TV or potentially worse (finger stuck, etc). I tell hiim to stop, discipline him, and he repeats the process not even 5 minutes later. Often times the TV is unplugged for the majority of the day. He whines and cries and asks for Pooh and Elmo and Mickey over and over and over .... sigh.

so todd and i had a heart to heart last night and talked about how to get this obsession with the TV under control. we decided to do a trial experiment and remove the tv from the living room and see how responds. this child LOVES books so we were hoping he would think, "okay i will move on and look at books and play with my toys". oh no. It was an unbelieveable nightmare when he discovered the TV missing this morning. It was not so bad at first... he literally stopped in his tracks. I put some books where the tv was, and he picked those up and started looking at them.... but after breakfast he lost all control. (mind you, we have a little TV at the breakfast counter... so he is not going with out PBS... just the DVDs are the problem). He was so upset he could hardly handle it... i mean hysterical. I have never seen him so upset. Wow. Todd even came home from work after hearing how upset he was to help me get him calmed down while i was also getting jordan fed... he has never had to come home like that before- definitely a first!

I know jonah probably didn't understand why the tv was missing, and i do feel bad that i couldn't explain that we were taking a break from the DVDs today... but then the other part of me wanted to kick myself for letting this become SO SO important to him. know what i mean? It's sometimes hard to balance everything (tv time, craft time, play time....). So we ended up leave the house (because he was trying to crawl behind the tv table to find it... sheesh) and going to my mom's house for a change of scenery. So that was our first major experiment with jonah. i don't know how effective it was, but yesterday when i caught him watching the instructional dvd for our dog's leash... i knew we had to step in.

We also had jordan's three month check up today at 11:30. Or, i thought it was 11:30... but when i got there, i found out that the appointment was at 11:00. Yep, it was even written in my calendar as 11:00. That was the first time i have ever blew an appointment like that. Good grief! Thankfully, they still took us back and she had her check up... she is 13 lbs and 10 oz. yay! she is also 23 1/2 ". jonah actually did REALLY well during her appointment. He held my hand and quietly watched. That was also a first, he usually cries louder than jordan during her appointments. After our crazy morning i was very thankful to end it with a positive!!

So we'll see what happens next with the TV. I do think we made some progress but i was just surprised at how upset the little guy got.

Random Thoughts.

The funny thing about cell phones is that when you dial a wrong number and hang up durning the voicemail message, the the wrong number owner will actually call you back and asked if you called them. How stupid is that. "Yes i called you and i obviously didn't want to talk to you because i didn't leave a message." I got a message yesterday from a Jon something or other telling me when i can return his call. He was a digit away from my sisters phone number and oops i accidently called him. He not only left me a time frame to return his call but he also left me his home number. Are we all that desperate to talk to someone? He then later proceeded to call my cell AGAIN from this home number. What the heck! I called the wrong stinking number I AM SORRY! do i need to call them back to tell them this? Geez!

Back that thing up!

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Deepest apologize for my extended absence from the Hufford blog. there seems to be a virus running around my house... a computer virus that is! I have been WITHOUT my computer for over a week now. My cousin is doing his magic and fixing it while i patiently await it's return. It's amazing how disconnected i feel from the outside world. I actually have to USE A PHONE BOOK to look numbers and addresses up! I forgot we even had one! How did we do it before internet? I feel like the internet has "advanced us" so much but in many ways i am so dumb without it... i guess i just depend on it way too much.

Anyway, back to the virus. it came out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks. all of a sudden all this creepy stuff started popping up on my screen. What the heck! I mean, i don't go to any strange websites, and i don't open suspicious emails... we are so careful... and we even have Norton for cryin out loud, so how did this happen!? that is when the panic set in. I don't back things up. I just never thought this would happen to me, so why put everything on disks? And let me clarify something here, i am obsessed with pictures. I am crazy about scrapbooking so pics are so important to me. And i work from home and have these files on my personal computer. So Panic mode set in, i don't know what i would have done if i would have lost all my precious pictures of my family. Thankfully nothing was lost. So please take this as a friendly and gentle reminder to back your computer up!!!! You just may thank me later : )

Time Burglar

I have decovered my time burglar- the computer.

This weekend my computer developed a pretty serious looking virus, or lets just say something is not right with this thing. It's the latest on the list of things that are breaking down at the hufford house. (if you don't know what i am talking about, read this). I can handle cleaning the dishes by hand, but not having email or internet? that's like my connection to the outside world!

So the computer went off and we tinkered around. We still need to fix some things but here i am with a brief window of time online. Ironically, the last two days while my computer was in hibernation, i was really in a groove of getting things done.... things that make you go hmmmmm. Email/internet is totally my time burglar. I can spend so much time doing nothing on the computer! I need to develop some time management skills with this thing so i can keep the beast under control. What steals your time and how do you keep it under control?
